Mangroovity 2025: A Real Action by UGM Physics Graduate Students for Environmental Sustainability

Yogyakarta, August 2, 2025 – The Graduate Student Association of Physics, Universitas Gadjah Mada (HMPF UGM), successfully organized Mangroovity 2025 at Baros Beach, Bantul, Yogyakarta. This event was part of the celebration of the 6th Anniversary of HMPF UGM and served as a tangible expression of students’ concern for nature, especially the mangrove ecosystem.

Mangrove Planting at Baros Beach

During the event, participants consisting of Master’s and Doctoral students of Physics UGM carried out mangrove planting in the conservation area of Baros Beach. Mangroves were chosen because of their vital role in maintaining coastal ecosystems, preventing shoreline abrasion, and serving as habitats for a wide variety of marine and terrestrial life. The activity was not only about planting, but also included educational sessions on the importance of mangroves in climate change mitigation and environmental sustainability.

As an organization that accommodates Master’s and Doctoral students of Physics UGM, HMPF is not only focused on academic development but also actively engages in social and environmental initiatives. Mangroovity 2025 stands as proof that graduate students have a moral responsibility to contribute positively to both society and the environment.

The President of HMPF UGM 2025 emphasized that this activity is expected to go beyond a symbolic planting ceremony, inspiring students to continuously contribute to environmental conservation alongside their academic pursuits.

The Importance of Environmental Awareness for Students

This activity also underlined the significance of environmental and social awareness among students. As members of academia, graduate students are expected not only to excel in research and scientific achievements but also to remain sensitive to pressing environmental issues. Mangroovity serves as a reminder that intellectual capacity should always be accompanied by social responsibility and ecological care.

One of the main messages highlighted during the event was a quote by Chris Maser:
“What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another.”
This message reflects the idea that protecting the environment ultimately means protecting humanity itself.

Participants and Atmosphere

Mangroovity 2025 was attended by dozens of active Master’s and Doctoral students of Physics UGM, along with several faculty members who supported the initiative. The spirit of togetherness was strongly felt, as participants enthusiastically planted mangrove seedlings, captured memorable moments, and exchanged ideas on the role of students in preserving nature.

Beyond environmental action, the event also served as a platform for networking and bonding among graduate students across cohorts, strengthening solidarity and fostering a sense of belonging to HMPF.

Through the successful implementation of Mangroovity 2025, HMPF UGM hopes to nurture a lasting spirit of environmental care among students, lecturers, and the broader community. Planting mangroves at Baros Beach may seem like a small step, but it carries significant meaning for the sustainability of our planet.

As a graduate student organization, HMPF UGM is committed to integrating academic excellence with social and environmental contributions. May this event inspire more positive movements in the future.
